Serve It Up

My name is Kari Sleezer and I just recently graduated Arizona State University with my bachelors in English Literature.  I am currently serving at Life Link Church as the outreach coordinator and have a passion to see God encounter the broken, hungry, fatherless and widowed.  My other passions include writing, youth ministry and family.

For as long as I can remember there’s been a tradition in my family that we hold to every time we go on vacation. This tradition of all the traditions we have is by far my favorite. Wherever we travel we take a day to throw a pizza and ice cream party for a local orphanage or group home and are usually permitted to meet and play with the children there. Several times we’ve been able to bless the orphanage with new toys and board games.  Visiting an orphanage or group home is always the best part of any vacation I’ve taken. This tradition has taught me that no amount of time on the beach or on vacation will spice up my life like living as the light, hope and love of God that He has called me to be. Psalm 82:4 says the people of God are to, “Defend the poor and fatherless. Do justice to the afflicted and needy.” We are all called to be the light, a beacon of hope and the expression of God’s love to a broken world.

Seeing the longing for love in the eyes of every child whether 4 years-old or 14 years-old as they would cling to my arms just to be near me still humbles my heart. Each time I’ve grasped that moment to let them know that they are loved and valuable, I end up returning home feeling like I was the one who blessed and impacted for eternity instead.  There’s a refreshing of my spirit that happens, a gratitude for the life God has given me that doesn’t come from any amount of time spent on the beach or sightseeing with my family. There’s an inspiration to live on purpose that only comes from giving of myself.

Whenever I feel weary, close to giving up and struggling to feel inspired or grateful for the life God has given me I know it’s time to give. It’s time to reach out to others and get my attention off myself, my problems and concerns.

The Word of God tells us in Acts 20:35 “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”  Are you in desperate need of extra blessing in your life? Love on the poor, the broken, the fatherless and the widowed.  Do you desire to spice up your life? Reach out to those who have no idea that God loves them.

There’s a blessing that comes from reaching out. One of the definitions of the word blessed is, “divinely or supremely favored.” Another definition describes being blessed as, “blissfully happy or contented.” I don’t know about you, but I want to be divinely favored and blissfully happy! I want the favor of God on my life!

If you’re looking for a way to spice up your life, participate in a life group outreach this summer at Life Link Church. Join us at 8 a.m. in the parking lot of Perry High School the First Saturday of every month as we love on the community through serving.  Participating in life group summer outreaches and First Saturday is an easy way to make an impact on our region and a great way to spice up your life!
