One day while I was thumbing through Pinterest I came across this super cute scarf that was made from a t-shirt, and I just had to try it! So I clicked on the picture hoping to get a link with instructions but sadly, I found nothing. I was determined to learn how this scarf was made, so I decided to do some more research online and found several tutorials on how to make these scarves on YouTube.  After watching a few videos I decided to give it a try and I was pleasantly surprised at how simple it actually was. {Oh, did I mention this project is FREE?!} I only had a few old tees that I was willing to part with, so after I cut them all up and transformed them into cute scarves, I wanted to make more and try out some other techniques. I went to the Goodwill and purchased 4 used t-shirts for about $10.00 total, so if you don’t have any old tees at home I would definitely recommend this. The Goodwill has a huge colorful selection.

I am excited to share this project with you so let’s get started!

Here is what you need: a t-shirt and a good pair of scissors…yep, that’s it! When picking out your t-shirt there are a couple things too look for:

*size: I would suggest a 2XL or a 3XL, but I wouldn’t recommend going smaller than a large. The bigger the shirt the more times you will be able to loop it around your neck, which will give you more styling options.

*side seams: Avoid these at all cost! The seams will not curl in and leaves the scarf looking a little sloppy.

*Fabric: stick to the basic t-shirt material which is usually a 90/10 cotton/polyester blend.

Ok now the fun part, cutting your t-shirt. You will need to lay your t-shirt flat, and with sharp scissors cut across from armpit to armpit, (you can discard the top portion of your t-shirt or save it for another craft J) then you will want to cut off the bottom hem. (You can save the hem for later) Next you will want to cut strips making sure you cut in the same direction as you cut off the bottom hem.  (If you accidentally cut the strips in the wrong direction you may end up with a fringe scarf which is super cute too!) Once you have all your strips cut you will want to stretch them out, as far as you can without ripping the fabric. Then you can use one of your loops (or the bottom hem you saved earlier) to bind the rest of your loops together by wrapping it tightly around the loops and securing with a knot, and you are done! (If you want to get extra fancy you can take six of the loops and braid them.)  I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and give it a try!

P.S. Here are some other cute scarves I made!
